    The World Bank has launched a major new website http://data.worldbank.org . It offers free access to more than 2,000 financial, business, health, economic and human development statistics and is also available in French, Spanish, and Arabic. In addition to providing free access to a large number of development indicators which were formerly available by subscription only, the new site allows users to download entire datasets for a particular country or indicator, quickly access raw data, click a button to comment on the data, and email and share data with social media sites. The data come from many sources including the Bank's 186 member countries and more than 30 international agencies, private and NGO partners.

  • The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will meet on 22 and 27 April to address gender equality, empowerment of women and development cooperation
    In preparation for the substantive session in July this year, the Council will organize a series of meetings. The first one is scheduled for 22 April from 10:00 - 1:00 p.m., which is being organized by FAO and IFAD, in collaboration with WFP, the World Bank, UNIFEM, Heifer International, WOCAN, and the Hunger Project. It will address the topic "Who feeds the World in 2010 and Beyond: Rural women as Agents of Change and Champions of Global Food Security".

  • Rising above the financial and economic crisis
    The 9th session of the UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 19 April to 23 April. In addition to the main theme, the Committee will also examine the 2010 theme of the annual ministerial review of the high-level segment of ECOSOC: implementing agreed goals and commitments in regard to gender equality and empowerment of women. This session will be opened by Ms. Rachel Mayanja, Assistant Secretary-General, and Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women.   • Assessment of where Africa stands on women’s health - ECOSOC holds regional meeting in Senegal
    The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is organizing its first regional preparatory meeting for the 2010 ECOSOC Annual Ministerial Review (AMR) on the theme of Women's Health, on 12-13 January 2010 in Dakar, Senegal. The regional meeting on women’s health will explore concrete opportunities in the Africa region to advance progress as well as share best practices, lessons learned, and continuing challenges, and initiate joint actions. The event will be organized around three interactive panel discussions on “Maternal health”, “Women and HIV/AIDS” and “Empowering women to improve their health”. Around 80 participants, among them government ministers, health and gender experts, policy makers, NGOs and business representatives will attend the event. Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade will deliver opening remarks on Tuesday, 12 January. ECOSOC President Sylvie Lucas, United Nations Assistant-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women Rachel Mayanja, and other high-level officials will participate in the two-day event.
