Attention Homes Holiday Teen Night

Zonta volunteers spent a fun filled evening on December 9, 2009 at Attention Homes' Broadway House in Boulder with at risk teen residents.  Everyone got in the holiday spirit making a gingerbread house and holiday cookies together.

Birthing Kits

Zonta Foothills collected donated materials and directed the assembling of 1000 "birthing kits" with other Zonta Clubs at the District 12 Conference on October 29-31, 2009.  The kits will be used to help ensure "clean births" for women in Africa and Asia. Thank you, Tommie Atanasoff, for organizing this very important project that directly benefits women internationally.

Helping Teen Parents Graduate High School

The Teen Parent Program at Fairview High School is sponsored by the Boulder Valley School District and allows pregnant or parenting teenagers to complete their education while providing them with on-site quality childcare. The students may earn a high school diploma, GED certificate or technical education certificate. This program currently enrolls 32 young parents and 28 babies.  The staff works tirelessly to support them with schooling, job training, and family issues.

The value and long-term benefit of finishing their high school education is enormous, both to the young parents and their children.

In addition to providing financial support to the program for incidental needs, Zonta Foothills volunteers help as tutors, mentors, computer trainers, and even babysitters.

Women in the Workforce

Finding a first job or going back to work after an absence can be daunting. Zonta Foothills Club of Boulder County teamed up with Twenty Ninth Street Mall to host the First Annual Women in the Workforce educational event on October 18, 2008. It was a fun day of coaching, information and a panel of mall and retail personnel who shared advice and ideas to Boulder County women looking for work.

Over 20 Zonta volunteers worked with participants on self assessments, resume writing, interview preparation and mock interview practice. J.Jill, Ann Taylor Loft and Macy’s provided tips for putting together a wardrobe of interview and work attire on a budget, and a make up consultant from Mac cosmetics provided some makeup tips for looking your best. Lunch was provided by Peet’s Coffee, Mad Greens and Daphne’s Greek Restaurant. Quick and easy stress management tips were shared by Lululemon Athletica.

Many of those attending were able to complete job applications provided by the mall’s merchants and a few even anticipate employment for the holiday season. The club will continue to reach out to participants to see if there are other ways to help them pursue job opportunities and sends a big thank you to the businesses that supported the effort.
