…women should do for themselves what men have already done—occasionally what men have not done—thereby establishing themselves as persons, and perhaps encouraging other women toward greater independence of thought and action.

President’s Letter
Amelia Earhart was a pioneer in aviation but throughout her life, she inspired other women and was a model for success at daunting tasks. Her story is remarkable for both her achievements as a pilot, and perhaps even more importantly, as a voice for women’s rights. In January Zontians around the world, celebrate Amelia Earhart. A dedicated Zontian, she was not only a pilot but staunch advocate for women’s rights. In 1929, Earhart co-founded The Ninety-Nines, the first organization for female pilots. She was a member of the National Woman's Party (NWP), which supported her efforts to promote gender equality. In 1932 she lobbied for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). (Some things never change; we continue the battle today! See Advocacy Committee message below.) And of course, Amelia Earhart was an active Zontian, belonging to both first the Zonta Club of Boston and then the Zonta Club of New York from 1928-1937.
Amelia Earhart’s journey, although ending abruptly, continues to inspire women today. Her words remind us to walk in her shoes, traveling our personal journey with spirit, determination, adventure, optimism, and innovation just as Amelia Earhart did. We each walk in the shoes of those who came before us, building careers, communities, and families, while we establish ourselves as mentors for the generations of women who journey behind us. This camaraderie is at the heart of the Zonta Foothills Club of Boulder County. It makes us a unique group of women working together for a shared sense of purpose.
The new year is a time to reflect on where we’ve come from and where we are going. As I look, back I see Club members who are friends, mentors, and leaders, who worked together to help women realize Amelia’s priority of “greater independence of thought and action.” I see a group of women who, without hesitation, stepped up to support community members in need. I see women who helped to develop climate justice leaders, social workers, teachers, and women who understand the importance of leading and giving back. But perhaps most importantly, I see women who supported one another through life challenges, reached out to share the responsibilities of our Club, and worked together.
2025 will be a new journey. We will each face challenges whether they are personal, professional, or otherwise. But I know that we will continue to support one another. We will take the journey together building on the hard work of the past. Our Foundation’s financial future is sound, allowing us to expand our scholarships, support our youth leadership clubs, and be an anchor to our community. We will continue to be strong partners to EFAA, Community Foodshare, SPAN, the Boulder Valley Schools, and others. Our voices will get even stronger and as members of the Women’s Collaborative of Boulder County and the Zonta USA Caucus, we will advocate for policies to protect women and families. We will represent climate justice, the ERA, and pay equity, while we take up the fight against child marriage, domestic violence, and sexual assault. Our scholarships will become change-makers as we grow our offerings and increase our award levels to support Boulder County women continuing their education.
It’s a bright future but only if we take the journey together and follow the inspiration of Amelia Earhart who calls on us to encourage “other women toward greater independence of thought and action.” Here is to a wonderful ride!

Check Out Our Website!
Our new website is up on https://www.zontafoothills.org/ . Take a peak and let us know what you think. A BIG thank you to Lisa Lesniak’s son Ryan who spent a great deal of time learning about our Club, our Foundation and Zonta International to create a website that conveys our mission, voice and activities. The site will serve a wide range of purposes as it talks to potential members, potential donors and scholarship applicants. Look at all of the pages and explore the navigation from one page to another. There are a variety of ways to get around the site and we intentionally tried to tell a story about the important mission we all share.
Our committee will be reaching out to each of our Committe Chairs to get input. We want the pages to reflect your specific goals and we want to be sure that the content, forms, pictures and structure supports your projects.

1. Colorado Gives Day…Another Year to be Grateful!
Congratulations everyone! Colorado Gives Day (CGD) is now history and a record-breaking success. As of January 2, we have broken our budgeted goal of $38,000 and we are closing in on $40,000. You can see many of our donors listed on our Colorado Gives page. If you see any of your friends or family listed please thank them for supporting our mission. A big thank you goes out to members of the Finance Committee who wrote personal thank you notes to each of our CGD donors.
Thanks to Our Scholarship and Advocacy Committees..
…we have our Zonta Foothills Foundation Climate Justice Scholarship winners!
The 1st place award of $5,000 is awarded to a team of three University of Colorado graduate students who applied as cohorts: Brigid Marks, Sara Fleming and Mariah Bowman. They are graduate students who are working collaboratively with undergraduates in a course that impacts the CU Boulder’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) and incorporates climate justice.
Because of the stellar group of applicants who applied for this grant cycle, we also awarded a 2nd place prize to Casey Davis who will receive $2,000. Casey is a Ph.D. candidate in chemistry, working to create sustainable electronics for renewable energy applications.
We hope to have these women join us at our February business meeting.

December Filled with Holiday Cheer and Service
The Boulder High School Pantherz Z Club had a busy December. The Club wrote letters from Sants for sick children in local hospitals. Through the Care Letter program they were able to use their language skills to bring a bit of holiday cheer to kids who might need a little lift to make the season brighter. Then they came out in force for Share-a-Gift. Always important volunteers for the program because at least 75% of our members are bi-lingual they were able to help families navigate the festive event to gather gifts for their families. The Flatirons Golden Z Club and some of our Platinum Z Club members joined forces so that had a team of more than 25 students helping out.
As we enter into the new year, our Boulder Pantherz Z Club will be focusing on their ongoing Culture of Respect program. We will keep you in the loop as their plans develop.
We are also excited to be working with the Watershed School as they prepare for their Club chartering and first member induction in late January. We will keep you posted as these plans are firmed.
To welcome the new year, the Golden and Platinum Clubs will be supported by our Club member Margareta Bancroft, who will run a virtual seminar on the importance of LinkedIn and how to use it as a professional development tool. Margareta’s expertise as a recruiter and professional coach provides a unique opportunity for our future leaders to prepare for careers. Thank you, Margareta!

Advocacy Committee
The Finance Committee is conducting a do-diligence on our endowed scholarships. We want to ensure that both the Zonta Educatez Fund and the Bev Hackbart Scholarship (with the CU Foundation) are working to their fullest potential. To that end, we recently met with the Community Foundation of Boulder County which manages our endowed Zonta EducateZ Fun to review the guidelines of the fund and Foundation policies. We will be talking with CU and we are also exploring other foundation management options for the future.
A CD that we had set up in June 2024 matured in late December and after a review of our budgets, funds on hand and influx from Colorado Gives we have decided to secure another CD. This insures that our funds are working for us. Thank you to Treasurer, Michelle Medal for managing this process and for helping us manage the funds that are now arriving in our accounts from Colorado Gives. Michelle will give a Club update at our next meeting.

ERA: Our Time is NOW!
Happy New Year! We recently sent you an email from the ERA coalition in honor of President Carter’s commitment to women’s rights, specifically the actions he took to ensure passage of the ERA .… Zakiya Thomas
President & CEO, ERA Coalition & ERA Coalition Forward explains “We honor President Carter’s unwavering support for the Equal Rights Amendment. His steadfast dedication to gender equality and his tireless efforts to advance the ERA will forever be a part of his enduring legacy. President Carter's actions demonstrated his commitment to justice, and his work continues to inspire us in the fight for equality.”
That’s why we can’t give up the fight. The time is NOW…you can still reach out to President Biden to ask for his support. Write him, text him, call him and call your MoC’s every single day and apply pressure for the ERA to be published in the next couple of weeks.
It is not too late. Our time is now to take action:

A Busy and Fun December
Thank you to the Service Committee and our volunteers. Everyone helpedto make this a happy holiday season for those in need.
On December 3rd Zonta members wrapped books at the Our Center in Longmont for so clientshad gifts for their families and themselves. We didn't keep count but we did go through a lot of books and wrapping paper. It's always fun to help people pick out gifts for the holidays.
December 11th at Community Food Share (CFS) - another book wrapping give away from 9 AM to 3 PM. The new system for the CFS clients spaced out the wrapping to a steady stream of book wrapping and many happy people.
More than 30 Zonta members, Boulder High School and Watershed School Z Club members and Flatirons Golden Z Club members were out in force helping all morning at Share-a-Gift. Through this one-day event we helped a little over 600 families, representing 1,420 Boulder children. Holiday cheer was spread with more than 10,000 gifts given away! 2025 Service projects are in the works - stay tuned.
