Stand Out For Gender Equity
Gender equality is a basic human right and its achievement has immense socioeconomic implications.
Yet, gender inequalities are deeply rooted in every society. Since 1985, the Zonta Foothills Club has worked to create a more equitable future for women and girls. But progress is slow.
Pay & Employment Equity
Globally, women earn an average of 16% less than men according to Forbes Advisor.
Women are paid approximately 84 cents for every dollar a man makes. In Boulder County there is a significant difference in median income between men and women. The Boulder Community Foundation Trends Report reports the median income by gender is $34,885 for female earnings vs $56,457 for male earnings. Source
While women represented 46% of world employment, only 32% of managerial positions were occupied by women in 2023.
In Colorado 62.5 percent of women in Colorado aged 16 and older are in the labor force, compared with 73.1 percent of men. Among women, Black women have the highest labor force participation rate, at 65.2 percent. Source
Gender Inequity Leads to Gender-Based Violence
Throughout the world, one in three women and girls have experienced physical and/or sexual violence. Less than 40% sought help, and of those, only 10% went to the police.
In Colorado, the statistics are very similar. 1 in 3 people experience some form of sexual violence, in their lifetime, 80% of which take place prior to the age of 25. Forty-two percent of victims experienced their first completed rape before the age of 18 years.
- More than 640 million or 26% of women aged 15 and older have experienced intimate partner violence.
- 17.9% of firearm deaths in Colorado between 2016-2020 involved intimate partner violence.
- In Colorado, 36.8% of women and 30.5% of men have experienced intimate partner physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking.
- 15% of homicides in Colorado were committed by intimate partners.
